July 2019

At the start of the year the ADSHG paramedic training project started, with the generous financial support of the Society for Endocrinology (SfE). Our aim is to reach as many paramedics and ambulance crews as possible, all over the country, with a seminar focusing on adrenal crisis and emergency management of Addison’s.

The course comprises a module on Addison’s Disease set in context with the JRCALC guidelines for emergency management. Each seminar is complemented by members’ own experiences. We know that paramedics learn not just through theory, but by hearing real life accounts from real people.

Following an overwhelming response from over 50 members in December, our two volunteer paramedic training coordinators Polly and Richard having been incredibly busy matching volunteers up to training dates.

We have secured commitments from several ambulance trusts and medical colleges, to deliver over 300 training places this year. Under the auspices of our Clinical Advisory Panel (CAP), we’re working closely with SECAmb (covering Kent, Surrey and Sussex) to prototype a training programme for their paramedic apprenticeship scheme. Training events were scheduled during April & May across the region :

We worked closely with North East Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust to run 2 training events in Gateshead for 40 paramedics. We were involved in the SECAmb paramedic apprenticeship scheme. This saw us delivering training to each paramedic training cohort during 2019. We also worked with Liverpool John Moores University, to deliver training seminars to paramedics, nurses & midwives throughout 2019.

I'm raising money for the Addison's Disease Self-Help Group so that they can continue to support people with Addison's and adrenal insufficiency. Addison’s is a rare endocrine condition where the adrenal glands do not produce enough steroid hormones and can be life threatening. It affects approximately 1 in 10,000 people, meaning an estimated 300 - 350 new cases are diagnosed each year across the UK, this makes it roughly 300 times rarer than diabetes.

Sick Day Rules

Minor ailments can affect anyone with a steroid-dependent adrenal condition very differently. Things like vomiting, diarrhoea, colds and flu could cause an adrenal crisis. It’s important that you spot the early symptoms of a bug or cold and adjust your steroid replacement medication.

Updated NHS Steroid Card Released

Following the early release of the new NHS Steroid Emergency Card back in March to keep patients with Addison's or adrenal insufficiency safe during the COVID-19 crisis, the NHS steroid card has been updated and physical copies will be available to order from Tuesday 18th August 2020 for hospital teams!
Addison's & Adrenal Insufficiency: Advice for Dentists

The ADSHG guidelines offer illustrative guidance for major and minor dental procedures. It is important to recognise the physical stress of any invasive dental procedure and to ensure that adequate glucocorticoid cover is provided for steroid-dependent patients.
