ADSHG sponsor CoMICs members for #eECE 2022 – supporting the next generation of Endocrinologists

Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group (ADSHG) are delighted to announce their sponsorship of 3 CoMICs team members to the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) Conference in 2022 - #eECE2022.

One of the aims of the ADSHG is to improve medical awareness of our rare endocrine condition in the medical community. This is why we are delighted to be sponsoring 3 CoMICs members, an international group of health professionals and medical students, to attend the #eECE2022 conference. We hope our sponsorship will promote endocrinology as an exciting and developing area, enticing medical students to stay and grow in this speciality.

The ADSHG first became involved with CoMICs in October 2020, when we spotted their fantastic infographic video explaining Primary Adrenal Insufficiency to the medical community. This bite size video looks at adrenal insufficiency, explains aetiology, sign and symptoms, investigations, management, adrenal crisis and the vital patient training in sick day rules, administering the emergency injection and carrying the NHS steroid card.

Members of the expert Endocrine review panel for the video included ADSHG Trustee Dr Helen Simpson and Addison's Clinical Advisory Panel (CAP) member Professor Wiebke Arlt. You can watch the video on our Medics page and also CoMICs YouTube channel.

CoMICs & ADSHG Video Collaboration

Explaining Addison’s and adrenal insufficiency can be difficult and confusing for many. So we’ve been working with the CoMICs team to produce a new video and poster series, this time aimed at people with Addison’s and adrenal insufficiency and all those who support them.

The 3-part video series explains:

How to diagnose and treat Addison’s disease.
What is adrenal crisis and how to manage it.

It affects approximately 1 in 10,000 people, meaning an estimated 300 - 350 new cases are diagnosed each year across the UK, this makes it roughly 300 times rarer than diabetes.

NHS Website: Addison's pages updated

Working with NHS Digital, the ADSHG has updated the NHS content regarding Addison’s disease on the NHS website. The new guidelines incorporate extensive input from ADSHG steered by the Chair of the ADSHG’s Clinical Advisory Panel, Professor John Wass.
Dislike splitting tablets? Smaller doses now available!

New doses of Hydrocortisone instant release tablets, including lower strengths 2.5mg and 5mg, have been released. This removes the step of breaking tablets, giving people with Addison's and adrenal insufficiency a single tablet with the dose they require.

Sick Day Rules

Minor ailments can affect anyone with a steroid-dependent adrenal condition very differently. Things like vomiting, diarrhoea, colds and flu could cause an adrenal crisis. It’s important that you spot the early symptoms of a bug or cold and adjust your steroid replacement medication.

Updated NHS Steroid Card Released

Following the early release of the new NHS Steroid Emergency Card back in March to keep patients with Addison's or adrenal insufficiency safe during the COVID-19 crisis, the NHS steroid card has been updated and physical copies will be available to order from Tuesday 18th August 2020 for hospital teams!
Addison's & Adrenal Insufficiency: Advice for Dentists

The ADSHG guidelines offer illustrative guidance for major and minor dental procedures. It is important to recognise the physical stress of any invasive dental procedure and to ensure that adequate glucocorticoid cover is provided for steroid-dependent patients.
